Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on 4th April, 1972. As an only girl, she was raised also through her maternal grandparents. Scott was a student at The Philadelphia High School for Girls After graduating, she was accepted into Temple University. Scott completed her secondary school education and also worked at two different job. She planned on becoming a teacher of English in a secondary school. Her dream to become a high-school English teacher, was cut short after she dropped out of school. She started her career doing live performances of poems as well as her own work. She eventually joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson, a part of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by the two. The singer performed at an Roots concert. Following that, she started working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She was able to perform during the Canada production of Broadway's show Rent. She was signed by the label's first artist.
